One of the first photos of buildings I took, I wanted to mimic the landscapes seen in early soviet cinema which puts emphasis on clouds to see what would happen, but it didn't work out as the other aspects of the composition was ignored.
With the sky I used two brushes to get that mixture in the paint on the paper. I thought it turned out pretty good. However the boarders weren't defined and this made the painting incomplete.
I wanted to give off a more pessimistic feel from the painting so I put in more emphasis on the blues and cold red.
This photo was took near the library in front of the Royal Navy's sports centre with the qunwharf buildings in the back. I thought the depth seen with the relationship between the sports centre and the two landmarks looked like a good subject to paint.
this is the true to life painting. In future paintings I dropped the landmarks as I wanted to focus more on the colours and not what's in the pictures.
I wanted to capture the coldness of the day whilst still keeping the warmth of the sun that I remember feeling that day. I made all the blue colours cold whilst making the yellows warm.
I wanted to see how to see how thickness of a paint could effect the relationship with the rest of the painting. The yellows were diluted with a lot of water to give the effect of white and I made the darker, bluer colours with more watercolour paint. When painting the bushes I found out that you can get a sharper brushstroke easily when compared to a diluted colour.
I went to gunwarf because the buildings offered an interesting challenge in their design and colour due to their relative newness. It differs from commercial road as their architecture doesn't stick too much to the council designed and neo classical buildings in the city centre.
With blocking in I finally sussed it. I feel that blocking in can help give off a bigger contrast between the shadows and the sides of the building that are exposed to the sunlight
I'm not too proud of this one. it was slanted on it's side without me knowing it. It just takes any sense of aesthetic appeal away from the painting. I'll make sure to make extra caution when painting in the future.
When going down historical portsmouth I saw a road which seemed to have two clashing architectural designs down the same road. I decided to record this because the polar opposite nature of the traditional pub and the minimalist block of flats gave an appeal due to their duality nature.
The medieval style of structure with the industrial red bricks was a unique combination. You'd see something similar to several castles in europe built by the teutonic order like malbork castle, though that wasn't made in the industrial era it still made the cathedral give of that similar militaristic feel (no insult meant to the cathedral itself).
