Group work production part 2

Production part 2: it wouldn't let me space bar the last one

Breakdown reel:

I believe I got everyone down correctly on this.
All unmarked parts done by me.

The team should be proud of themselves.

While reflecting on these 6 months working on Bakunawa I have developed mostly positive feelings about the project. We worked at a team without many hiccups and there wasn’t any drama between us throughout the production of the film; we were straight to the point and honest with each other but it was never personal. However there have been some things I do feel mixed about.

Our project was based on Philippine mythology and the story of the 7 moons. Originally Bathala, the god, defended the moon goddess from an evil water dragon, however Mihaela changed it to make it seem as if the moon goddess and the dragon had an interest in each other. This project was a mish mash of mediums and tech, including Adobe flash, photoshop and maya. Masking and textures also played an important role.

For reference I acted out the scenes and filmed it. In this case they’ve really helped in know what to draw and what to put as keys or breakdowns.
For the animation I was originally tasked to animate some of Bathala’s shots. However this soon turned into all of them. For Bathala I wanted someone who, while regal and powerful, was also a control freak and overbearing towards the moon goddess. I felt that in the end I got some sort of sense for that. However I could’ve put more emphasis on these during his creation of the moon. Animation wise I feel that the timing and spacing was well done, alongside Camilla’s breakdowns. However I do have to say my line quality compared to ray’s is atrocious and is something I need to work on. Clean up for me was also an issue alongside the process. In regard to the process I do feel I finally learnt the proper way to animate for me, which is a rough pass (not “ruff,” mind you) for keys, breakdowns and important in-betweens, then a final rough, then a clean-up, then final finishes. Overall I felt my work for Bathala was more good than bad.

I’m not sure how the others feel about Camilla’s absence, but from what she told me I’d give her the benefit of the doubt that she wasn’t being lazy. I will say that when she was here for the last stretch he did give in the effort for inbetweening and colouring in, however because she’s predominantly a 3d animator her technical skill brought her down. This left me to redo a few breakdowns she gave me. Overall she had the rockiest ride during the production and I hope it gets better for her after we’re done.

Apart from this there wasn’t much that went wrong. However I do want to address something. While I didn’t mean for it to happen I felt that I hogged the Bathala scenes to animate. I ended up animating a lot of it when it was Ray’s character. I do feel somewhat guilty of this and I hope it hasn’t impaired Ray’s opportunity to improve her own skills at the craft.

Humourous phases of funny faces.

New ones:
A captivated audience watches a true thespian at work

I scare a first year in this one. They will learn to fear me.

That is a spicy meat a' ball!

In the beginning Mihaela's idea was chosen and the crew was made up of me, Camilla, Ray and Sophie. It ended up being a great team with no drama between us we all left our egos at the door (I feel like this was the case, anyway).

Group work: Pre production

Concept art:
This was the first piece of concept art I made for the project, however it was before Jordan graced us with his godly talent.

These four are what happened after Jordan gave us his pearls of wisdom. They were incredibly helpful in learning the tech.

After these we did a mad jam session on designs for the facets of the production and I was given the tree.  I did these after thinking about the nature of the tree relative to its creator and captive.

Mad jam for tree design:

Other miscellaneous stuff:

By the end we went with Mihaela's version.

Animatic work: first animatic
These were created when we all had to pitch a version for the film.

Parts of the ending were incorporated at the end.

Second go:

was given a section to do instead of the whole thing. We mish mashed all our sequences to make the final thing

Animation tests:
Keys and breakdowns by Ray. Inbetweens and colouring by Oscar
While a valiant effort to animate the dragon in 2D, making it a 3d model was probably a wise choice.

Keys and breakdowns by Oscar. Inbetweens and colouring by Ray.
While we liked the look of it, the disintegration of the tree became less of a plot point as time went on as we put focus on the characters.

Pipeline test:
Done by Oscar and Ray
me and Ray spent a whole Saturday session figuring out the dragon animation and how to mask it. We feel it was a good representation of our vision.
