SOVIS WORK: All of it

Sovis Work

For this unit I felt that I’ve learnt a lot about compositing thanks to the workshops, but I felt that maybe 3 or 4 more workshops dedicated to specific aspects (e.g how to create specific effects in after effects) would’ve been even better.

Ultrarealistic:

I felt the ultrarealistic video was my strongest one when it comes to quality of work. Though there were some things I could’ve improved if I planned it out better. For example the cliff and the fjord in the distance could’ve been on their own layer which would’ve allowed me to create depth in the scene. Also I was confused on how to make the stars twinkle in the sky (the one’s I did myself, not the ones already filmed in the northern lights). I tried to show the link to Norse Mythology with the war memorial at sea front and the aurora borealis, as the Scandinavians believed that the northern lights were the Valkyries picking up those slain in battle. So the idea would be that those who died in the world wars were being brought to Valhalla.

Video:
it's alright, innit.

Different Media where they don't Match:

The cartoon one was my weakest one. Though I do like my backgrounds for that I felt the animation itself could’ve been better. It was the first one I did though so I can’t be too negative about it. I did learn a lot from it. The backgrounds I feel are the strongest out of all the ones I’ve done for the whole unit so far, A nice combination of primary and secondary sources where they mostly match and feel in place. The colour correcting also helped make them feel better. With the cartoon cat I wanted to do a warner bros. run, like when Penelope Pussycat runs away from Pepe le Pew. The timing of the feet was a challenge but I feel I got it okay. Clean up was where I failed. The static upper body boiled a bit and the line work for the legs is a bit of.

Matched Media:

The matched media one was the hardest one to do for me. I think it was mainly trying to insert a solid that would actually show the effect. Apparently it depends on the colour. I feel this scene would’ve been much better if there were more workshops in the week. For example making the far away explosions took up a good chunk of time which could’ve been used elsewhere. Another thing was that the rendering of the airplanes didn’t work out so I had to use a play blast (but that wasn’t the fault of the unit, it was just maya being difficult) Overall I felt it was a moody scene, although I feel that I could do a better technical job once I know more about the technology.

Overall with no prior knowledge of after effects or compositing I felt that I now have a good solid grounding on the basics of those technologies, as well as splicing pictures together in order to make something new.
